As a not-for-profit health system, our organization does not have stockholders. Rather, we serve our stakeholders. Those stakeholders are the men, women and children who depend on us for superior, compassionate care. They are also the individuals, organizations and financial institutions who may never experience that care personally but who place their confidence in it all the same.
A significant portion of our budget each year is devoted to community benefit. We reinvest in our facilities, acquire leading technologies, fund the training and development of our staff and support medical research. We provide health education to the communities we serve, and we offer financial support for deserving community organizations. Perhaps most significantly, we deliver care to those in our community who cannot afford to pay. In fiscal 2011, the amount of uncompensated care we provided exceeded $74 million.

Uncompensated care
Wellmont Health System's mission is the delivery of superior
health care with compassion to every patient we serve. This care is
performed regardless of an individual’s ability to pay, and we provided more than $74 million in uncompensated care during fiscal 2011. Our charity care
policy is as follows.

Our hospitals provide a full write-off of charges for patients with incomes less than twice the federal poverty guidelines and a 60 percent write-off for uninsured patients above that income level. Our physician groups provide similar discounts. We also provide a number of services for which little or no payment is received, as Medicare, Medicaid and state indigent programs do not cover the full cost of those services.
Donations to community organizations
We give back to the community through charitable and community organizations, including the United Way, the American Heart Association, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the American Cancer Society and dozens of other organizations. Wellmont donated more than $1 million to community organizations in fiscal 2011.
Training and education for healthcare professionals
We support the training and education of physicians, nurses, medical students and other healthcare professionals. In addition to financial support to area colleges and universities, our hospitals provide real-world learning opportunities to nursing students and medical residents through internships, externships and residency programs. Wellmont invested more than $5 million in healthcare training and education in fiscal 2011.
Community health and outreach
In support of our mission as a not-for-profit healthcare provider, we devote significant resources each year to community health education and free health screenings. We provide free screenings, health fairs, support groups, medical libraries and health programs. In fiscal 2011, Wellmont provided more than $5 million in community health and outreach programs on topics ranging from Alzheimer’s disease to smoking cessation. We also offered free screenings to promote the early detection of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other diseases.
Caring for our communities
Through the selfless devotion of their personal time, our employees, physicians and volunteers provide important services to our community. In fiscal 2011, their contributed time totaled more than 102,000 hours.
