Physician Leadership
One characteristic that sets Wellmont Health System apart is its focus on physician leadership.
Physicians are prominent members of the boards of each of our hospitals. They direct the course of Wellmont Health System. Physicians in all Wellmont Health System facilities are invited to provide leadership and suggestions. Physician leadership has improved all our facilities – from our largest tertiary hospital to our smallest community hospital.
“This is the first system I’ve ever worked in that really truly took and valued the physicians’ opinions before making decisions. I’m on a medical leadership committee of physicians that helsp make very strategic decisions for the hospital system.”
Dr. Mark Woodard
“Wellmont involves the medical staff more than any hospitals that I’ve seen. Wellmont is very interested in the physicians’ opinions.”
Dr. Jack Butterworth
“It’s always nice to be able to carry your concerns to the administration and feel that you’re going to be heard with more than just lip service to what you’re worried about.”
Dr. Randall Barker
“As physicians, we have a lot of responsibility, and we have a lot of avenues to provide leadership to the administration and work with them closely in order to provide an environment to take care of our patients.”
Dr. Ben Scharfstein
“I’m just starting to get involved with administrative duties at the hospital but certainly, my input was requested early on – even my first year out.”
Dr. Rebekah Austin
“I feel the cooperation we’ve gotten from the administration for the trauma patients has been outstanding. I’ve had no difficulty when I’ve gone to our administrators and said we need certain things now. They are very responsive and will give us what we need to take care of the patients. There are other systems I’ve worked in that have not been as responsive to the needs of the trauma patient. It is a joy to work here.”
Dr. Cory Siffring
“Wellmont is very oriented towards the physician. It’s physician led, physician driven and very responsive to physician needs and wishes.”
Dr. Claes Svendsen
“You sometimes have boards that have no physicians on them, led by people who really don’t understand what it’s like to see 30 sick patients a day. With Wellmont Health System, because it’s so physician based, they do.”
Dr. Maurice Nida
