• Nursing Externship Program

Wellmont's summer nurse extern program is an employment opportunity for nursing students interested in pursuing a nursing career. Summer nurse extern roles are valued at Wellmont Health System and give nursing students who are within a year of graduation the opportunity to acquire valuable skills and knowledge working with experienced nursing staff in a state-of-the-art healthcare environment.

Why choose Wellmont’s nursing externship program?

A preceptor/preceptee relationship can help foster professional role development and facilitate the transition from nursing education to nursing practice. Wellmont's nursing externship program lets you earn while you learn. And since the program takes place the summer prior to RN graduation, opportunities for employment as a nurse extern may be available after completion of the summer extern program.

Summer nurse externs will experience multiple opportunities, including:

    • Attending new Wellmont employee orientation
    • Learning from an experienced preceptor in assigned clinical areas
    • Providing direct patient care to patients in the forms of meals, linen changes, documentation, IV application, urinary catheterizations and dressing changes

The summer nurse extern program is a full-time, 36 hours per week position with a professional registered nurse. It lasts for seven weeks during the summer and is a paid, non-benefitted position.

    Qualifications and deadline for application

The summer nurse extern program is to be completed during the summer prior to graduation. To qualify, you must be a student in good standing and submit a completed application, your official school transcripts and two faculty reference forms from your teachers before the application deadline of March 31, 2016.

Letters of recommendation must be in a sealed envelope and signed across the seal by the person completing the form. If you are a current Wellmont employee, one reference must come from your Wellmont supervisor and one must be completed by your school faculty representative.

Official transcripts and references may be personally delivered or mailed in a sealed envelope to the following address. Please mail all components required for application at the same time.
