Nursing Externship Program

The Wellmont Health System Nursing Externship Program builds nursing knowledge in a practice arena. A preceptor/preceptee relationship fosters professional role development and facilitates the transition from nursing education to nursing practice. Any extern who completes the program will be given preferential consideration for an RN position as defined by vacancies and continued interest. This program lets you earn while you learn.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must be a student in good standing with a minimum 2.7 GPA and submit a completed application before the application deadline of March 15th along with your official school transcripts and two letters of recommendation from your teachers. You will also need to complete and submit a Nurse Extern Application. Those accepted into the program are expected to dedicate a minimum of 32 hours per month in their chosen clinical track. Final candidates will be selected based upon a successful interview with nurse managers.

Schedules

The most common schedules are:

  • 12-hour days
  • 12-hour nights
  • 12-hour day-night rotations
  • Depending on preceptor assignments, nurse externs may work every other weekend.

Uniforms

Uniforms and their care are your responsibility. Depending on the area assigned, your uniform will be white, colored or hospital-provided surgical scrubs.

Length of Externship

The extern program starts in late May/early June and continues for 8 weeks. After completion of the summer extern program, opportunities for part-time employment as a nurse extern II may be available throughout the remaining academic year.
