Patient navigators

The Wellmont Cancer Institute's board-certified oncologists and other physicians are supported by an elite group of oncology nursing specialists – patient navigators – who have received advanced training in the management of breast and lung cancers. Wellmont's patient navigators work closely with patients and their families from the point of diagnosis until all treatments have been completed. These patient navigators are available to help guide patients and their families through the cancer care process as easily and seamlessly as possible by:

  • Equipping patients with knowledge and resources
  • Assisting with schedules and coordination of appointments, medical insurance and other aspects of the care process
  • Answering questions and explaining treatments
  • Serving as physician liaisons
  • Providing a source of comfort and support

Cancer treatment teams

The Wellmont Cancer Institute conducts regular multi-disciplinary planning conferences to determine optimal plans of care for newly diagnosed cancer patients. And the cancer institute's Tumor Board – a group of board-certified, multi-disciplinary physicians – studies many cancer cases and reviews the best possible treatment options. During these group meetings, diverse teams of physicians, genetics experts, research staff members and oncology nurses provide input from a wide range of medical disciplines. These reviews create a collaborative environment in which each patient can benefit from the knowledge of a large number of medical professionals.

Patients can rest assured they are receiving the best possible cancer care through the combined resources of the Wellmont Cancer Institute's treatment teams.
