MammoSite Therapy at Holston Valley Medical Center
Designed for treating early-stage breast cancer, our MammoSite radiation therapy system is conducted on an outpatient basis and allows many women to avoid mastectomy. Plus, MammoSite radiation therapy can be completed in just five days compared to six weeks for traditional treatment.
How does MammoSite work?
After removing the cancerous tumor, we treat the tumor bed with radiation therapy. Removing the tumor creates a cavity, allowing us to insert the radiation source inside the cavity. This system limits the amount of healthy breast tissue exposed to radiation, while maintaining a success rate comparable to traditional breast-conservation therapy and mastectomy.
