Stroke Prevention

At Wellmont, we encourage everyone to adopt a lifestyle that reduces risk factors that can lead to stroke. Although people with diabetes and certain genetic disorders may face extra challenges, most of us can easily reduce the risk of stroke by following these simple guidelines:

  • Keep your blood pressure under control
  • Find out if you have an irregular heartbeat, and if so, work with your primary care physician to manage it
  • If you smoke, stop—smoking doubles your risk of stroke
  • If you drink alcohol, practice moderation
  • Know your cholesterol number and work with your primary care physician to keep it within acceptable ranges
  • Include physical exercise in your daily routine
  • Enjoy a lower-sodium, lower-fat diet
  • Talk to your physician about circulation problems that can increase stroke risk

Sometimes, however, modifying your lifestyle isn’t enough. You may need the following prescription or over-the-counter medications to help control or reduce the risk of stroke:

  • Plavix
  • Agrinox
  • Cumadin
  • Aspirin (speak with your doctor before starting an aspirin regimen)

Check our calendar of events to find out about free stroke screenings in your area. And remember, if you think you may be having a stroke, call 911 immediately. Early treatment is critical to positive outcomes.
