Q: What is hospice?

A: Hospice care is a choice you make to enhance quality of life for a person approaching the end of life. Patients with life-limiting illness may choose to spend the remainder of life at home with the support of family, friends and caring professionals. Hospice care focuses on patient comfort and counseling to the social, spiritual and physical needs of patients and their families.

Q: When is hospice care available?

A: Hospice patients typically have a prognosis of living six months or less, although this may vary. During this time, patients and families receive care and support from the hospice care team. The sooner a patient is admitted to the program, the greater the level of support and comfort available.

Q: Can I get hospice support at home?

A: Hospice care is provided under close medical supervision, nearly always in the patient’s home. The entire hospice team is available to patients and families in the comfort of the home environment.

Q: Who arranges for medications and supplies?

A: Special medical equipment and supplies are frequently necessary to care for terminally ill patients at home. The hospice care team arranges all pharmacy and equipment needs for patients and families.

Q: How are hospice payments handled?

A: Medicare, Medicaid, TennCare and private insurance pay for most hospice services, though no one is denied service. If you need assistance in clarifying coverage, please call the Wellmont Nurse Connection at 1-877-230-NURSE.
