Q: What is palliative care?

A: Palliative Care is a medical and advanced practice nursing specialty dedicated to treating  pain and symptoms from illness or its treatment and for offering support to patients and families during chronic, progressive or life-threatening illness.  Palliative care focuses on quality of life and incorporates the patient’s values and goals in identifying treatment choices.

Q: Is palliative care the same as hospice care?

A: Both palliative care and hospice care focus on patient quality of life and support of family. However, palliative care can be a holistic part of care and symptom management during ongoing treatment of illness. It can be a focus of care much earlier than can hospice.

Q: How can I receive palliative care?

A: Palliative care at Bristol Regional Medical Center and Holston Valley Medical Center is by referral from your primary care or attending physician.  If you want a palliative care consultation, please speak with your physician.

Q: Who pays for palliative care?

A: Payment for palliative care is generally covered by insurance.

Q:  What happens when I am discharged from hospital?

A: If you are able to get to appointments, and with your physician’s consent, you can be followed for a short time by palliative-care specialists as an outpatient. Outpatient visits facilitate the monitoring and management of pain or other symptoms, as well as family support and the continuation of discussions regarding goals of care.
