Nursing Externship Program

The Wellmont Health System Nursing Externship Program builds nursing knowledge in a practice arena. A preceptor/preceptee relationship fosters professional role development and facilitates the transition from nursing education to nursing practice. Any extern who completes the program will be given preferential consideration for an RN position as defined by vacancies and continued interest. This program lets you earn while you learn.

Qualifications
To participate in the Nurse Extern Program, you must have completed a fundamentals in nursing in either an associate or baccalaureate degree nursing program, meet Wellmont Health System job-related health requirements, submit a completed application for employment and have a satisfactory academic record. A minimum GPA of 2.5 with official transcript submission and completion of a nurse extern application with two faculty references are required. Final candidates will be selected based upon a successful interview with nurse managers.

Schedules
The most common schedules are:

  • 12-hour days
  • 12-hour nights
  • 12-hour day-night rotations
  • Depending on preceptor assignments, nurse externs may work every other weekend.

Uniforms
Uniforms and their care are your responsibility. Depending on the area assigned, your uniform will be white, colored or hospital-provided surgical scrubs.

Length of Externship
The extern program starts in late May/early June and continues for 10 weeks. After completion of the summer extern program, opportunities for part-time employment as a nurse extern II may be available throughout the remaining academic year.
