Ed Roop Named Chairman For Mountain View Regional, Lonesome Pine Boards; New Board Members Named In Wellmont’s Community Hospital Division

Ed RoopEd Roop, vice president of Farmers and Miners Bank in Wise, Virginia, has been named chairman of the combined board for Mountain View Regional Medical Center and Lonesome Pine Hospital.

A longtime board member, Roop succeeds Skip Skinner, whose term expired. Skinner will continue to serve on this board and the Wellmont Health System board.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be entrusted with the chairmanship for Lonesome Pine and Mountain View Regional’s board because these hospitals contribute significantly to the health and well-being of Wise County residents and surrounding communities,” Roop said. “As we build on the strengths of these outstanding hospitals to achieve a sustainable model of care for the future, our board is focused on meeting the needs of patients we are privileged to serve.”

In addition to sitting on the board, Roop most recently served as chairman of the Lonesome Pine Hospital Community Fund. This fund has made significant contributions to organizations that make a positive difference in the county’s quality of life. In June, the fund contributed $200,000 to assist in enhancements to Bullitt Park in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.

In addition to the transition in chairman from Skinner to Roop, new members have joined those who will continue their service on the boards of directors for Wellmont’s community hospitals.

Dr. Kevin Allred, Danny Lambert, Dr. James Raj and John Schoolcraft have joined the combined board for Mountain View Regional and Lonesome Pine.

Dr. Allred is a highly respected dentist who operates a practice in Big Stone Gap, and Lambert is a retired field agent for the Virginia Department of Taxation. Schoolcraft owns Schoolcraft Consulting and is a member of the Wise County Board of Education. Dr. James Raj is a medical doctor who practices with Wellmont Medical Associates Ear, Nose & Throat.

The other new board member in the community hospital division is Dr. Mihir Patel, a hospitalist with Wellmont Medical Associates. A medical doctor, he will serve on the board at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital, where he is also a member of the medical staff.

Several members have rotated off hospital boards in the community hospital division. They are Drs. Chris Basham and Michael Vacco, M. Blake Wilson Jr. and Martha Spurlock from the Lonesome Pine and Mountain View board, Dr. Jose Velasco from the Hawkins County Memorial board and Nikki Reed from the Hancock County Hospital board. Drs. Basham and Vacco are medical doctors.

“We are grateful to all the board members who have served so capably during their tenures,” said Fred Pelle, president of the community hospital division. “They have contributed greatly to the quality of care our physicians and other medical professionals deliver every day. We are also pleased because all our new board members bring outstanding credentials and will ensure the commitment to excellence and forward momentum continues on our boards.”
