Hawkins County Memorial Named One of the Top 100 Hospitals in the Country by National Firm

March 2, 2016 - Hawkins County Memorial Hospital, which has delivered expert care to the community for more than 50 years, has been named one of the top 100 hospitals in the country.

Truven Health Analytics, a national firm, listed Hawkins County Memorial among 20 small community hospitals in its 2016 rankings based on the 50-bed facility’s overall organizational performance. In addition, Truven has picked Hawkins County Memorial as one of 17 winners for the Everest Award, which honors hospitals among the 100 that have achieved the highest current performance and the fastest long-term improvement over five years.

These stellar rankings and honors by an organization focused on quality represent the latest national recognition the hospital has received.

“Hawkins County Memorial has distinguished itself for decades as an outstanding hospital committed to providing exceptional care to the patients it serves,” said Bart Hove, Wellmont Health System’s president and CEO. “Residents and businesses in Hawkins County and nearby communities have access to experienced physicians and other medical professionals who provide leading-edge care so patients can stay close to home for most of their health needs. We commend everyone at Hawkins County Memorial for setting such a strong example of excellence and continuing to look for ways to set the bar higher.”

The rankings were based on Truven’s annual study, which evaluated the hospital’s clinical and operational performance in 11 areas. They include inpatient mortality, complications, 30-day risk-adjusted readmission rate; severity-adjusted average length of stay; processing of patients through the emergency department and patient ratings of overall performance. Researchers used public information such as Medicare cost reports and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Hospital Compare website.

The selected hospitals do not apply for this recognition from Truven, and winners do not pay to market this honor.

“We are proud and grateful to be selected among the elite hospitals in the country, and it reflects the resolve of our physicians and the rest of our team to deliver an experience for our patients and their families that exceeds their expectations,” said Rebecca Beck, Hawkins County Memorial’s president. “This recognition is also a tribute to our patients, who have placed their trust in us to improve their lives and inspired us to constantly look for innovative ways to address their needs.”

Hawkins County Memorial has been a frequent recipient of national honors that demonstrate the caliber of care at the hospital. For four consecutive years, CareChex®, a division of Comparion® Medical Analytics, has named the facility among the top 10 percent in the country for patient satisfaction in overall hospital care, overall medical care and overall surgical care.

Plus, The Joint Commission, which accredits and certifies health care organizations and programs, selected Hawkins County Memorial as a Top Performer in Key Quality Measures® for 2015 in pneumonia and immunization.

Other achievements include selection by Becker’s Hospital Review in 2015 as one of the 49 hospitals in the nation with the best staff-to-patient medicine explanation practices. This national publication also named Hawkins County Memorial in 2014 among the 43 hospitals in the United States with the cleanest patient rooms and in 2013 as one of the 56 hospitals with the best pain management.

In one of the hospital’s best-known examples of providing exemplary care, physicians and nurses in Hawkins County Memorial’s trauma room collaborated with Hawkins County EMS to save the life of a man who had been without a pulse for 109 minutes.

Hawkins County Memorial provides a comprehensive level of services, including surgery and inpatient care, for patients. The hospital’s emergency department is available around the clock every day, and the facility also provides multiple state-of-the-art outpatient services, such as CT scanning, nuclear medicine and digital mammography. Plus, Hawkins County Memorial operates an inpatient and outpatient physical therapy program.

“We are pleased to serve the community with superior health care delivered with compassion and value our partnership with the people we are privileged to serve,” said Ravan Krickbaum, chairwoman of the hospital’s board of directors. “As the leading health care provider for Hawkins County, we appreciate the important role we play in the health and well-being of our friends and neighbors. Our hospital has assembled a tremendous medical staff and other medical professionals who use their skills expertly to strengthen the quality of care and quality of life in our community.”
