Dr. Jared HessDr. Jared Hess Moves To Next Stage Of Medical Career As Physician For Wellmont Medical Associates

Some patients might remember Dr. Jared Hess in the early days of his medical journey as the friendly face at Bristol Regional Medical Center who performed their X-rays.

As helpful as he was to patients in that role, Dr. Hess believed he needed to head in a different direction, leading him on a path toward a medical degree and a new career as a family medicine physician with Wellmont Medical Associates. He now sees patients of all ages with Dr. David Astin at 308 Eighth St., in Bristol and is a member of the Bristol Regional medical staff.

“As an X-ray technician, I worked in various parts of the hospital, but I felt my contribution was limited,” Dr. Hess said. “I saw what all the physicians were doing to improve patients’ lives and decided I wanted to be part of that profession.”

Despite knowing where he wanted his career to lead, Dr. Hess did not act on his dream – until his wife encouraged him to pursue it. In 2005, he entered the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and four years later began a family medicine internship and residency at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine.

Now that the transition from a radiology technician at Bristol Regional and Clinch Valley Medical Center to an osteopathic physician is complete, Dr. Hess is ready to enhance patient lives in a whole new way.

“I really want to help people,” Dr. Hess said. “Most people see it as ‘I’m going to the doctor because I’m sick,’ but to us, it’s more about trying to keep you healthy and keeping you up to date on your screenings, immunizations and other preventive measures.”

Dr. Hess has training to help patients with musculoskeletal health issues and also has a passion for sports medicine. As a primary care provider, he has an interest in treating carpal tunnel syndrome, ankle and foot discomfort and elbow and shoulder pain. He uses advanced hands-on techniques to relieve muscle and joint pain and improve mobility.

The son of a coal miner and a homemaker, Dr. Hess describes himself as laid-back, confident, compassionate and down-to-earth. He said he can relate well to patients because he has encountered many of the same challenges as others in the region.

Dr. Hess said he is thrilled to be part of Wellmont Health System.

“Wellmont has a long track record of being at the forefront of health care,” he said. “I saw it first hand during my training at Bristol Regional as an X-ray technician and now as a family medicine physician. I have been around Wellmont for a long time, and the health system is an excellent partner in caring for patients.”

Dr. Stephen Combs, chief executive medical officer for Wellmont Medical Associates, said Dr. Hess is an excellent addition to the organization.

“He brings a diverse medical background to his practice that not only has broadened his horizons but will prove beneficial for his patients,” Dr. Combs said. “Through his work in radiology and now as a physician, he understands clearly the concerns many patients have when something is amiss. But he also shares the focus of our organization that preventive care and wellness are essential to optimal health.”

Dr. Hess and Dr. Astin’s practice was formerly known as Midtown Medical Center but was renamed Wellmont Medical Associates to reflect a growing partnership between Wellmont and its integrated physicians. Created earlier this year, Wellmont Medical Associates is a physician-led, professionally managed organization that enables physicians to set the direction for patient care.

Dr. Hess is a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, the Tennessee Academy of Family Practice and the American Osteopathic Association.
