Dr. Kellie Blackwell Joins Wellmont Medical Associates;
Wellmont Continues Growth In Abingdon
Wellmont Health System’s
commitment to deliver a broad spectrum of high-quality care to Abingdon and
nearby communities has developed stronger roots with another family medicine
physician joining a practice.
Dr. Kellie Blackwell has joined Wellmont Medical Associates
and will practice with Dr. Alison Whitman, another family medicine physician,
and nurse practitioner Melissa Morenings at 24530 Falcon Place Drive. Their
office is located above Wellmont
Urgent Care and the Wellmont CVA
“I’ve always wanted to be a physician – ever since I was a
child,” Dr. Blackwell said. “It’s such a privilege to be able to help patients
with their healthcare needs and really special to deliver care at a growing
practice with caregivers committed to improving patients’ lives.”
This trio of medical professionals
shares a bond with each other and the community they serve. All of them are
natives of the Abingdon area, giving patients comfort that those who are
treating them understand their needs and the environment in which they live.
Dr. Blackwell, who describes herself as compassionate and
friendly, said she is focused on ensuring her patients stay well.
“One of the most important ways family medicine
practitioners can enhance a patient’s quality of life is to focus on preventive
care with beneficial screenings and appropriate lifestyle modification,” she
said. “We can help patients tremendously by educating them about their health
and guiding them so they do not experience chronic disease.
“I’m focused on treating the whole patient – body, mind and
spirit – and listening to their needs.”
As a family medicine physician, Dr. Blackwell treats
patients of all ages and coordinates care with other physicians should they
need specialized care. In her own building, those include physicians with the
heart institute, Wellmont
Medical Associates Pulmonology
& Sleep and Appalachian Orthopaedics.
In the near future, patients will also have access to CT
services in the facility to diagnose a number of conditions, including heart
disease with the HeartSHAPE® test.
Patients who come to Wellmont Urgent Care and do not have a
family medicine physician can seamlessly establish a connection with Dr.
“It’s terrific to be able to bring another high-caliber
physician to our practice, especially someone who is so in tune with the
community,” Dr. Whitman said. “Our practice has grown phenomenally in its first
year, and the addition of Dr. Blackwell will enable us to retain a high level
of service and enhance the continuum of care Wellmont delivers in Abingdon.”
The practice was formerly known as Medical Associates at
Falcon Place but was renamed Wellmont Medical Associates to reflect a growing
partnership between Wellmont Health System and its integrated physicians.
Created earlier this year, Wellmont Medical Associates is a physician-led,
professionally managed organization that better enables physicians to set the
direction for patient care.
Dr. Blackwell received bachelor’s degrees in biology and
chemistry from Emory & Henry College and then worked as a laboratory and
research specialist at the University of Virginia in the pediatric cardiology
and internal medicine departments. The next stage of her medical career was
attending the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Va.
After graduating in 2009, she completed a family medicine
residency at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery. She served as chief resident during
her last year and as didactics coordinator the year before.
Dr. Blackwell is a member of the American Association of
Family Physicians, American Osteopathic Association, American College of Osteopathic
Family Physicians, American Medical Association and Medical Society of
Virginia. She is certified in advanced cardiac life support and basic life
“We’re excited to increase the number of medical providers
in Abingdon,” said Dr. Stephen Combs, chief executive medical officer of
Wellmont Medical Associates. “Dr. Whitman has delivered outstanding care to
that community, and Dr. Blackwell will serve her patients with distinction. We
appreciate the support Abingdon has shown Wellmont and are thrilled to have
these two innovative physicians available here when patients have healthcare
