Dr. Bryan Watson Joins Wellmont Medical Associates, Grows
Continuum Of Care In Big Stone Gap
When Dr. Bryan Watson played football in high school, he
spent a considerable amount of time in physical therapy and at the orthopedic
While his immediate goal was getting healthy and back on the
playing field, Dr. Watson was intrigued by his interactions with various
medical professionals. It quickly became clear to him that he not only
benefited from medical care but wanted to deliver it as well.
So he embarked on a path to become a physician and is now
medicine with Wellmont
Medical Associates in Big Stone Gap. Seeing patients 15 and older,
Dr. Watson treats a variety of illnesses and works with patients to maintain
their health. He is also keen on the use of preventive health screenings to
catch possible health concerns early, when they are more effectively treated.
Dr. Watson practices with Dr. Christopher Basham, who is a
family medicine physician, and family nurse practitioners Christina Hammonds and
Karen Stallard. Their office is located at 323 Cloverleaf Square, Suite F-1.
“I enjoy getting to
know my patients so I can provide the best care for them that meets their
individual needs,” Dr. Watson said. “My patients will quickly appreciate how I
treat them as if they were my family. Having grown up in a small community, I
look forward to working with patients who may share the same background.”
Dr. Watson, who grew up in Gordonsville, Tenn., considers
himself laid-back, making it easy for patients to share their stories and
health aspirations with him.
In addition to his experiences with health care in high
school, Dr. Watson spent six years as an emergency medical technician for Smith
County, Tenn., Emergency Medical Services. That facility is located near
Tennessee Tech University, where he graduated in 2005 summa cum laude with a
degree in biology.
He subsequently graduated from The Edward Via College of
Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Va., and completed a residency in internal
medicine. He has a number of skills, including pediatric advanced life support,
advanced cardiac life support and advanced trauma life support. Dr. Watson is a
member of the American Osteopathic Association.
“We’re pleased to add Dr. Watson to our growing list of
physicians in Southwest Virginia and are thankful for his multifaceted
experience with medicine,” said Dr. Stephen Combs, chief executive medical
officer for Wellmont Medical Associates. “He will be an asset to Big Stone Gap
with his compassionate method of care and his attentiveness with patients.”
Greg Neal, president of Lonesome Pine
Hospital, said Dr. Watson will be an excellent component of the
healthcare delivery system in Wise County.
“We’re excited to have Dr. Watson with us in Big Stone Gap
and benefit from the contributions he will make to expanding the continuum of
care in the community,” Neal said “We are blessed to have many outstanding
physicians in our hospital. Dr. Watson’s commitment to his patients and
his excitement for serving the community is exemplary.”
Dr. Watson’s practice was formerly known as Medical
Associates of Southwest Virginia at Big Stone Gap but was renamed Wellmont
Medical Associates to reflect a growing partnership between Wellmont Health System and its integrated
physicians. Created earlier this year, Wellmont Medical Associates is a
physician-led, professionally managed organization that better enables
physicians to set the direction for patient care.
