Dr. Sidney Gilbert Joins Wellmont Medical Associates As
Internal Medicine Physician In Pennington Gap
Dr. Sidney Gilbert has joined Wellmont
Medical Associates as an internal medicine physician, enhancing the
level of patient care in Southwest Virginia.
Dr. Gilbert’s family has roots in Lee County. His father is
a native who graduated from Pennington High School, and Dr. Gilbert came here
during his youth to visit family. Now, he plans to move to a family farm in the
Woodway community and build a home.
Locating here to be closer to family and enjoy the region’s
natural beauty, Dr. Gilbert will practice with Dr. Monika Karakattu, a family
medicine physician, at 127 Health Care Drive, Suite 3, inside Lee Regional
Medical Center. He will treat adult patients for a variety of primary
care conditions and coordinate care with any specialists they need.
“I like to be the patient’s advocate and coach and teach
them how to handle certain types of diseases,” Dr. Gilbert said. “I work with
them as a partner, and I accomplish that by being a good listener. A big part
of internal medicine is just listening to patients. A lot of the time, they’ll
tell you what’s wrong with them if you listen to them.”
While he will work with a variety of conditions, Dr. Gilbert
has a special interest in working with patients who have medical conditions
associated with the gastrointestinal tract. He also likes to help patients at
risk for heart disease due to their hypertension and diabetes.
The son of a pediatrician, Dr. Gilbert always wanted to be
physician, but he discovered he wanted to work in internal medicine instead.
His chosen field also enabled him to work on preventing diseases from
progressing or even developing in the first place.
By confronting medical conditions in their early stages, Dr.
Gilbert learned he could affect someone’s quality of life significantly. He
said he is passionate about staying up-to-date with recommendations for various
health screenings and the best medications to treat his patients.
Dr. Gilbert said he is excited not only to be part of
Wellmont Medical Associates but also be affiliated with other components of Wellmont Health System. He said he looks
forward to working with cardiovascular physicians in the Wellmont CVA
Heart Institute, who see patients at Lee Regional and provide
teleconsulting services to the hospital from Holston
Valley Medical Center.
Dr. Gilbert will also interact with obstetricians and
gynecologists, nephrologists, general surgeons, orthopedic surgeons,
radiologists, pulmonologists, physical therapists and ear, nose and throat
“It enables me to give my patients the best quality of care
because I can use all of Wellmont’s services,” Dr. Gilbert said. “It’s an
excellent opportunity to work with great physicians and other topnotch
Greg Neal, Lee Regional’s president, said Dr. Gilbert will
play an important role in the health of Lee County residents and be an
excellent addition to the hospital’s medical staff.
“Dr. Gilbert will complement the medical staff of Lee
Regional Medical Center and ensure the continuum of care we are developing in
that community is only going to grow stronger,” Neal said. “He is well grounded
in the principles of internal medicine and will be an outstanding member of our
medical team, which is improving lives every day in the communities it serves.”
Dr. Gilbert received his medical degree from Nova
Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Ft. Lauderdale,
Fla., and completed his residency at Michigan State University’s Kalamazoo
Center for Medical Studies.
As he was growing up, Dr. Gilbert matched his love of
science with a passion for the outdoors. That is reflected today in his
interests beyond medicine: bird hunting, deer hunting, fishing, hiking and working
on the family farm.
