Dr. Adel El-Abbassi Joins Wellmont Medical
Associates; Becoming Physician Fulfills Lifelong Dream
Improving patients’ lives was a lifelong plan that has now
been fulfilled for Dr. Adel
“Ever since I was a child, I had the dream of helping
patients who might be suffering from a medical condition,” said Dr. El-Abbassi,
the newest member of Wellmont
Medical Associates Pulmonology
& Sleep. “This is an extremely important period in their lives,
and they need support as they battle major illnesses.
“That’s why I had this dream of standing beside patients and
helping them during challenging times – perhaps even saving their lives.”
Dr. El-Abbassi, a pulmonologist and critical care
specialist, sees patients at the practice’s offices at 271 W. Medical Park
Blvd. in Bristol and 24530 Falcon Place Drive in Abingdon, Va. He also performs
a variety of pulmonary procedures at Bristol
Regional Medical Center.
In particular, Dr. El-Abbassi has an interest in treating
respiratory conditions such as shortness of breath, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, occupational lung diseases and asthma. Other conditions for
which he provides care are pneumonia, emphysema, sepsis and chest infections.
Dr. El-Abbassi also helps patients who need the following
interventional pulmonology procedures: electromagnetic navigational
bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, airway stents and palliative lung
cancer treatments. Electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy is a cutting-edge,
minimally invasive outpatient procedure that enables physicians to reach
potentially cancerous legions in more distant regions of the lung.
Dr. El-Abbassi practices in the same office as Drs. Michael
Baron, Girendra Hoskere, Lisa McKinney-Smith and Roger McSharry and nurse
practitioner Melissa McPhail.
Choosing to work for Wellmont Medical Associates Pulmonology
& Sleep was easy for Dr. El-Abbassi. He worked in Wellmont Health System facilities for six
years as he completed his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in
pulmonology and critical care medicine at the James H. Quillen College of
Medicine at East Tennessee State University. He also served as a hospitalist
“Wellmont is my family,” Dr. El-Abbassi said. “I feel
comfortable working with my fellow caregivers, and they are very nice to me.
People have said good things about the care I deliver to patients, and it
became clear that working for Wellmont would be the right choice for me. It’s a
pleasure to work with the other physicians in the hospital and interact with
the administration of Bristol Regional and Wellmont Medical Associates.”
Dr. El-Abbassi graduated from medical school and also
completed a residency in ear, nose and throat medicine at Beirut Arab
University in Lebanon.
He considers himself to be a good team leader, which he
finds particularly beneficial in the intensive care unit. But Dr. El-Abbassi
also said his goal is to continue improving his research and clinical skills so
he can provide even higher-quality care and practice at the top level of his
Dr. Stephen Combs, chief executive medical officer of
Wellmont Medical Associates, said Dr. El-Abbassi is an outstanding addition to
the physician team.
“He is a well-trained physician who brings an impressive
skill set to patient care,” Dr. Combs said. “We were impressed during Dr.
El-Abbassi’s residency and fellowship with the high caliber of care he delivered
and his commitment to the welfare of his patients. We’re pleased he has joined
Wellmont Medical Associates and look forward to watching him contribute to the
innovative care for which our physicians and other medical providers are so
Dr. El-Abbassi’s practice, formerly known as Blue Ridge
Medical Specialists, was renamed Wellmont Medical Associates to reflect a more
dynamic relationship between Wellmont and its integrated physicians. Created

direction for patient care.
