Dr. Fadi Abu-Shahin Joins Wellmont Cancer Institute, Brings Oncology Care To Lee Regional Medical Center
Residents of Lee County diagnosed with cancer now can receive much of their care close to home with the addition of an oncologist to the medical staff of Lee Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Fadi Abu-Shahin, a physician with Wellmont Medical Associates whose practice is part of the Wellmont Cancer Institute, will see patients at Lee Regional starting Thursday, Oct. 4. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of lung and breast cancer, leukemia and other noncancerous blood disorders such as anemia and hemophilia.
He will also see patients at Wellmont Medical Associates Oncology & Hematology (formerly known as Kingsport Hematology Oncology), 4485 W. Stone Drive, Suite 200, Kingsport, Tenn., where six other skilled oncologists and two specially trained nurse practitioners also provide compassionate cancer care.
Dr. Abu-Shahin said patients’ peace of mind is of upmost importance, especially when they face a serious illness such as cancer. He said patients will receive tremendous support from him and other caregivers at the cancer institute.
“A cancer diagnosis is not a death sentence anymore,” Dr. Abu-Shahin said. “But doctors must be honest with patients about their illness and let them know what they need to do to overcome it so they can live the rest of their lives with fulfillment.
“My patients should know that I will be fighting on their side throughout their journey. When you become my patient, you become my friend and my family.”
During his medical education at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University, Dr. Abu-Shahin routinely interacted with physicians and other healthcare providers at Wellmont Health System hospitals, and he had a positive experience.
“The organization is built to serve patients first, and I was impressed with the health system’s commitment to the community as well as the work environment it provides for physicians,” he said. “I cannot think of a better place for me to continue growing as a physician and a person.”
Since Dr. Abu-Shahin is now seeing patients in Lee County, patients there will no longer have to travel to see an oncologist for regular office visits.
If their condition requires radiation or chemotherapy treatments, patients can rely on the cancer institute’s treatment centers at the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center in Norton or at Wellmont Medical Associates Hematology & Oncology in Kingsport.
Dr. Abu-Shahin is a gifted physician who will provide a high level of cancer care to the people of Lee County, said Greg Neal, Lee Regional’s president.
“I’m thrilled we’ve added such a high-quality and innovative oncologist to the medical staff,” Neal said. “Dr. Abu-Shahin will greatly enhance what is already an excellent level of medical care for our patients. Together, Lee Regional and the cancer institute are growing the continuum of care and reinforcing our commitment to bring strength and hope to the residents of Southwest Virginia who receive a cancer diagnosis.”
With the addition of oncology care, Lee Regional has increased the number of its specialty services. Physicians with the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute see patients at the hospital and also provides teleconsulting services from Holston Valley Medical Center to Lee Regional. Other specialized services available at Lee Regional include obstetrics and gynecology and ear, nose and throat care.
Dr. Abu-Shahin received his medical degree from the University of Jordan and completed his residency and an oncology fellowship at the ETSU medical school. He is board-certified in internal medicine and board-eligible in oncology.
While he received his training at ETSU, Dr. Abu-Shahin served as the chief resident of internal medicine and received the school’s Thomas Ronald Award for Excellence in the care of cancer patients
