Dr. Mark Aziz Joins Heart Institute as Interventional Cardiologist,
Endovascular Specialist in Kingsport
Mark Aziz, who has trained with pioneers in cardiovascular disease at
premier medical facilities in the country, has joined the Wellmont CVA
Heart Institute as an interventional cardiologist and endovascular
Delivering exceptional care to patients at the heart
institute’s Kingsport office and Holston
Valley Medical Center, Dr. Aziz performs minimally invasive procedures to
treat vascular disease. A medical doctor, he also received advanced training to
aortic valve replacements, a novel procedure for patients who are not
appropriate candidates for open-heart surgery.
Holston Valley is the only hospital in the region and Kingsport is one of only
about 100 cities in the country where this valve-replacement procedure is
Rahul Sakhuja, a medical doctor and an interventional cardiologist at the
heart institute, also performs these cases at Holston Valley.
“I have developed a passion for taking care of patients with
valve disease, especially those with aortic valve stenosis,” Dr. Aziz said.
“Many of these patients are unable to have open heart surgery to replace their
valve because of various medical conditions. In the past these patients had no
option to resolve their medical needs, but they now have a less invasive
approach that returns them to a high quality of life.”
Dr. Aziz also has a major interest in treating vascular
conditions that develop in blood vessels throughout the body. He highlights the
less invasive approaches that are now possible for cases such as aortic
aneurysms and traumatic aortic injuries as well.
Reflecting on his career to date, two cases related to his
training stand out. One was a 90-year-old who underwent the valve replacement
and was transformed from having trouble breathing in her home to being able to
attend her granddaughter’s college graduation. Another was a 17-year-old boy
who suffered a traumatic injury to his aorta in his chest that was able to be
corrected with a minimally invasive procedure.
Now, he is sharing his knowledge while learning from a team
of experts at the heart institute.
“The Wellmont CVA Heart Institute was attractive to me
because it has an outstanding and diverse group of about 50 physicians and
other highly qualified medical professionals who have an excellent work ethic,”
Dr. Aziz said. “They are focused on providing the best and most up-to-date
options for their patients and their cardiovascular needs, and I share this
“This region deserves a comprehensive cardiovascular program
to meet patients’ needs, and that’s exactly what they receive from the heart
The son of an ear, nose and throat surgeon and an
ophthalmologist, Dr. Aziz graduated from the Tanta
University medical school in Egypt and
completed initial training there. He then completed an internal medicine
residency and fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology at Indiana University
While he was there, Dr. Aziz served as chief fellow and trained with pioneers
in cardiology and echocardiography.
His next step was advanced endovascular training as a
Vascular Interventional Advances fellow. This prestigious opportunity is
offered to only one fellow in the United States each year and allowed
Dr. Aziz to train with innovative physicians in the field of vascular medicine,
including interventional cardiologists, vascular medicine specialists and
After he completed his training, Dr. Aziz practiced as an
interventional cardiologist in Boynton
Dr. Aziz is board-certified in internal medicine,
cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology by the American Board of
“Patients need to know we are here to help when they need us,”
Dr. Aziz said. “When somebody has cardiovascular disease, we recognize it’s a
challenging time in their lives and their family members’ lives. We’re here to
support them and provide our medical expertise and the best and latest
techniques close to home.”

Aziz has joined the practice.
