Dr. Matt Luff, Wellmont CVA Heart InstituteDr. Matt Luff Joins Wellmont CVA Heart Institute, Returns To Healthcare Roots At Bristol Regional

Dr. Matt Luff, an invasive cardiologist who was born and raised in the Tri-Cities, has joined the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute.

Dr. Luff will perform diagnostic cardiac catheterizations and see patients in his office for consultations and follow-up care at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He said he enjoys this form of cardiovascular care because he can be involved in so many aspects – from consultation to testing to procedures.

“It gives me the opportunity to take care of patients as a whole and work with them to determine what types of intervention they want as we go forward in their care,” Dr. Luff said. “I really enjoy listening to my patients and understanding their concerns and perspective and helping them understand how they can improve their health.”

Dr. Luff has a special interest in heart failure management, echocardiography and critical care. He said he likes working with patients in critical care settings because he sees the potential for their lives to improve.

In his practice, Dr. Luff will use an innovative method to perform cardiac catheterization procedures. Traditionally, cardiologists in the United States have used the femoral artery in the groin as the entry point for this procedure. However, in certain situations some cardiologists at the heart institute are now using the radial artery in the wrist. This option offers unique benefits including a shorter recovery time and a more comfortable procedure for the patient. Dr. Luff said patients appreciate this alternative.

A valedictorian at Sullivan Central High School, Dr. Luff has come full circle, having started his medical career working as a patient care technician at Bristol Regional when he was an undergraduate at East Tennessee State University.

“That’s how I paid my way through college,” Dr. Luff said. “It’s exciting to be back where I first learned about health care and providing it from a different angle.”

Not only did Bristol Regional hold a special place in his heart because of his work history, but Dr. Luff was attracted to the heart institute because it matched the level of care he was able to deliver during his training. Dr. Luff graduated from the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at ETSU and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in cardiology, all at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

“I found that the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute provided one of the most unique ways to continue practicing in a progressive manner in essentially an academic environment while still affording me opportunities for advancement that are common in private practice,” Dr. Luff said.

Dr. Jerry Blackwell, the heart institute’s president, said he is thrilled the practice was able to add Dr. Luff to the largest and premier cardiovascular group in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

“His extensive ties to our region will benefit our patients greatly because he clearly understands their health needs, having seen them first hand all his life,” Dr. Blackwell said. “Dr. Luff’s training, skill set and goals for enhancing the quality of life for our patients are equally impressive. We are thankful he decided to return home and share his expertise with communities he knows so well.”
