Dr. Pavan Karnati, an interventional cardiologist, has joined the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute in collaboration with Clinch Valley Medical Center.

He will see patients in the hospital and at the heart institute’s new office in Clinch Valley Medical Plaza, 6719 Gov. G.C. Perry Hwy., Suite 2800, in Richlands.

The heart institute serves more than 5,000 patients in Tazewell and Buchanan counties, and Dr. Karnati said the new office will enable him to now treat them closer to home.

“I treat patients like they are my family, and I want to make a difference in their lives,” Dr. Karnati said. “When I treat patients, I use guidelines from the American College of Cardiology, which ensures that they receive solid, evidence-based care.”

Dr. Karnati has specialized training to evaluate and treat coronary and peripheral vascular disease. He will perform procedures such as balloon angioplasty and stenting, which open blocked arteries.

He has the ability to use the femoral artery in the groin and the radial artery in the wrist as the entry point in cardiac catheterizations. Dr. Karnati also has training in managing patients before and after a heart transplant.

A graduate of Guntur Medical College in India, Dr. Karnati completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Albany Medical Center in Albany, N.Y. He completed another fellowship in heart failure at Boston University School of Medicine and VA Boston Healthcare System in Boston.

His most recent fellowship was in interventional cardiology at Bridgeport Hospital and Yale New Haven Health System, both in Connecticut. That has enabled him to perform interventional procedures in the coronary arteries and peripheral vascular system.

Dr. Karnati is board-certified in cardiovascular disease, echocardiography and internal medicine and is board-eligible in interventional cardiology.
