Dr. Jack Whitaker Joins Wellmont CVA Heart Institute, Practices in Johnson City, Greeneville

Dr. Jack Whitaker, a well-respected physician who has practiced cardiology in the area for more than 15 years, has joined the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute.

Dr. Whitaker will practice at the heart institute’s office on the Laughlin Memorial Hospital campus and in the Johnson City office. He has special interests in the treatment of coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, cardiovascular nuclear imaging and cardiovascular clinical research.

Board-certified in cardiovascular disease, including interventional and nuclear cardiology, Dr. Whitaker has served as a principal investigator in more than 30 clinical trials. He has now joined a practice which has consistently been the highest enroller in multiple national and international cardiovascular research trials.

Dr. Whitaker noted that many medications now used to treat patients for cardiovascular conditions were not available until just a few years ago. These new treatments are helping patients live longer and improving their quality of life.

“Before beginning medical school, I was involved in clinical and basic research,” Dr. Whitaker said. “I recognized the benefit that research provides in developing new therapies that enhance patient care. It enables me to provide care in a more meaningful and satisfying way for patients and myself. I remain passionate about cardiovascular clinical research.”

Dr. Whitaker is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.

“We’re thrilled to have a cardiologist with such depth of experience join our practice,” said Dr. Jerry Blackwell, the heart institute’s president. “Dr. Whitaker will contribute high-quality care to a stellar group of cardiologists who exhibit standards of excellence every day and enhance our growing presence in the Johnson City area.”

Dr. Whitaker has resided in Jonesborough most of his life and received his medical degree from the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. He also completed his residency and cardiology fellowship at that school and remains on faculty as an associate professor of medicine. Other academic appointments include the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Va., and the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville. He is the former chief of cardiology and director of the cardiac catheterization lab at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home.

“I’m ecstatic to join such an outstanding group of cardiologists and share best practices with my colleagues,” Dr. Whitaker said. “I am particularly excited about the opportunity to help the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute continue to build its presence in the Johnson City area. The people in this area have been kind to me, and I look forward to providing high-quality care as a cardiologist with the heart institute.”

The heart institute has more than 40 physicians who provide superior care in 13 offices in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and at Wellmont Health System hospitals and Laughlin.
