Marsh Regional To Hold Golf Tournament To Increase Scholarships For Local High School Students
KINGSPORT - Marsh Regional Blood Center is showing its gratitude for the support of its youngest donors with a new event to help them achieve their academic dreams.
The area's largest blood supplier is holding its inaugural golf tournament Friday, April 25, to raise additional funds for its scholarship program. The tournament will benefit high school students and be held at Warrior's Path Golf Course, with activities starting at 11:30 a.m. The round of golf begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. and ends with an awards ceremony at 5 p.m.
Marsh Regional has provided multiple scholarships to deserving high school students in recent years but wants to expand this initiative to thank a group that provides about 15 percent of the organization's blood supply.
"We appreciate students throughout the region who roll up their sleeves as soon as they are eligible to donate," said Don Campbell, Marsh Regional's director. "They save lives and help us meet patient needs in the 17 medical facilities we serve. We are proud of their commitment to improve the quality of life in our region."
It happens through Marsh Regional's partnership with 37 area high schools, which hold blood drives regularly throughout the school year at their facilities. Some students also organize drives at Marsh Regional's donor centers as part of the Holiday Heroes scholarship competition during the break for Christmas and New Year's Day.
Marsh Regional gave three scholarships to students in 2012 and 2013 and will provide six worth $1,000 each later this spring. In addition, Marsh Regional will distribute six $500 grants this year to area high schools. It recently awarded a $500 scholarship to this year's Holiday Heroes winner.
"This tournament enables us to further support the community by providing scholarships for students to pursue additional education," Campbell said. "It's a worthwhile endeavor that will help these students be well prepared to enter the workforce in the coming years. We encourage everyone to join us that day for a relaxing afternoon of golf and fellowship and invite anyone to also support this cause by considering sponsorship of this event."
An individual can play for $100, and a foursome can play for $400. Marsh Regional also offers a variety of sponsorship opportunities up to $5,000. All participants receive a box lunch and a tournament gift.
