Wellmont Adds Pulmonology And Sleep Services In Johnson City With Dr. Mark Emery

Wellmont Health System’s continuum of care in Johnson City continues to grow with the addition of pulmonology and sleep services delivered by a physician with more than 20 years experience in these fields.

Dr. Mark Emery, a physician with Wellmont Medical Associates Pulmonology & Sleep, has begun seeing patients at the Wellmont Outpatient Campus, 316 Marketplace Blvd., Suite 20, which is next to Tri-Cities Lifestyle Center. He treats lung conditions such as asthma, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and sleep disorders.

“We’re thrilled to advance pulmonary and sleep care in Johnson City, continuing our response to requests for high-quality medical services,” Dr. Emery said. “We are grateful for the patients in this community who entrust us with their care and are pleased we can extend our service closer to them.”

Dr. Emery graduated from medical school at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He completed his internship and residency at University of Louisville Health Sciences Center in Louisville, Ky., and then finished a fellowship in pulmonary disease and critical care at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City.

Dr. Emery has practiced with Wellmont Medical Associates Pulmonology & Sleep, formerly Pulmonology Associates of Kingsport, since 1989. He also serves as Holston Valley Medical Center’s co-medical director of the intensive care unit, chairman of the multidisciplinary lung cancer conference and medical director of pulmonary rehabilitation.

Board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care, Dr. Emery is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the American Thoracic Society and Tennessee Medical Association.

“Our patients in the Johnson City office will receive superior care with compassion from a highly respected physician when they see Dr. Emery,” said Dr. Stephen Combs, chief executive medical officer of Wellmont Medical Associates. “His expertise is sensational, and he has an excellent sense for the best approach to empower patients to better health.”

Adding pulmonology and sleep care builds on other high-quality Wellmont services that have achieved recent success in Johnson City. Drs. Bob Connell and Rita Plemmons, two family practice physicians with Wellmont Medical Associates, recently began seeing patients in the same building where Dr. Emery practices.

That facility also contains the Wellmont Breast Center, where patients can obtain mammograms with convenient evening and weekend appointments. The center is part of the Wellmont Cancer Institute.

A few doors away at 378 Marketplace Blvd., Suite 5, is Wellmont Urgent Care, which treats various illnesses and injuries and provides occupational health services. This facility, which remains open weekdays until 11 p.m., has a CT scanner, an X-ray machine, a full laboratory, ultrasound and physical therapy services.

Nearby at 2428 Knob Creek Road is the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute, one of 13 offices for the region’s largest and premier cardiovascular practice. Physicians there provide a range of cardiovascular services, including general and preventive cardiology, HeartSHAPE® calcium scoring, vein care, electrophysiology, stress testing, echocardiography and clinical research. They also combine with the other services in Johnson City to provide seamless access to Wellmont’s hospitals and other facilities.

“We’re grateful to the warm reception we have received for our care in Johnson City,” said Denny DeNarvaez, president and CEO. “We’re committed as an organization to deliver the best health care anywhere, and the physicians who access our services in Johnson City will benefit from experienced and innovative physicians.
