Comprehensive Weight Management Center at Holston Valley again earns accreditation

Holston Valley Medical Center’s  Comprehensive Weight Management Center, which enhances the health of its patients through a multi-pronged program, has been designated by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.

Holston Valley is the only facility in this region to hold an accreditation for bariatric surgery.

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery – or ASMBS – established a Centers of Excellence program to accredit those bariatric centers that consistently deliver optimal levels of performance and demonstrate exceptional patient outcomes. This program promotes patient safety, patient advocacy and continuous improvement.

In addition to the hospital and the weight management center, the accreditation includes Dr. Andrew Kramer, the center’s medical director, and Surgical Associates of Kingsport.

Potential candidates for gastric bypass surgery, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy must meet specific criteria and undergo a thorough evaluation process. After surgery, patients must comply with recommended eating habits, take required vitamins and participate in regular exercise.

The renewed designation from the national organization not only grants the hospital and its weight management center international recognition of quality health care but is also required for bariatric surgery to be covered by Medicare.

Recently, organizations and hospitals have reported beneficial effects for patients for conditions in addition to losing weight. The International Diabetes Federation noted that bariatric surgery should be considered earlier to help stem the complications from this disease. The American Heart Association said bariatric surgery can have a positive impact on hypertension, sleep apnea and cardiovascular dysfunction.
