5/21/15 - The third annual Brinley Addington Hometown Throwdown, presented by First Kingsport Credit Union, will be held Saturday, June 20, at the Kingsport Farmers Market on Clinchfield Street near Food City in downtown Kingsport. Addington, a rising country music star who was reared in the city, will be the opening act.
5/20/15 - Bristol Regional Medical Center has again received an exceptional score from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that evaluates hospitals on 28 measures of patient safety.
5/19/15 - The Wellmont Cancer Institute recently became the first in the region to offer TrueBeam STx with Brainlab with its installation in the J.D. and Lorraine Nicewonder Cancer Center at Bristol Regional Medical Center. TrueBeam complements other technology, such as CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System, to bring a full suite of treatment options to cancer institute patients.
5/14/15 - Chad Couch, M.D., a highly respected urologic surgeon who has practiced at Bristol Regional Medical Center for 15 years, has been named the hospital’s chief medical officer.
5/14/15 - Strong community support has enabled Wellmont Foundation to meet its $2.5 million goal to enhance services available in the neonatal intensive care unit at Holston Valley Medical Center and move it to a bigger space in the hospital. Now, Holston Valley is embarking on another beneficial project, unveiling a $2 million fundraising campaign to create Center for Women and Infants.
5/12/15 - Wellmont Medical Associates is expanding its delivery of high-quality, innovative care for diabetes patients with the opening of a dedicated center. Located in Abingdon at 24530 Falcon Place Blvd., the office is accessible from Exit 19 off Interstate 81.
5/12/15 - High school junior Emily Brady is committed to saving lives – and she isn't letting a life-threatening condition slow her down. Just two days before she was to host her first blood drive, an emergency surgery left her worried the event would be canceled.
5/6/15 - Wellmont Health System and Mountain States Health Alliance leaders have appointed a joint board task force as work continues to explore the creation of a new, integrated and locally governed health system. The joint board task force is a 14-member committee of the two boards acting as a liaison and providing information and guidance about developments in the transaction exploration process.
5/6/15 - For 20 years, Bruce Wankel has assisted people in the region who are interested in fly fishing. But recently, Wankel was the one in need on the Holston River with a major heart condition. Fortunately, Dr. George Testerman, a frequent fishing partner and a trauma surgeon, was on the boat with him and used his expertise to manage this medical emergency.
5/4/15 - Women who are unable to receive an annual mammogram because of lack of insurance are receiving valuable support from the community. Attracting nearly 200 people, the inaugural Wine Women & Shoes event raised about $77,000 for screening programs and genetic testing and counseling offered by the Wellmont Cancer Institute.
