• da Vinci Single-Site Gallbladder Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery with less recovery time

  • Gallbladder surgery – also called cholecystectomy – is traditionally performed by open surgery through a large incision. A newer alternative is minimally invasive cholecystectomy, which can be done laparoscopically through a few small incisions in the abdomen or an incision in the belly button.

In laparoscopic procedures, surgeons use long-handled instruments and a very small camera that sends images from inside the body to a video monitor to guide them as they operate.

    An advanced new option

Now, minimally invasive cholecystectomy can be performed through the belly button using da Vinci® Single-Site® surgery. This system features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and flexible Single-Site instruments, which enable doctors to operate with enhanced vision and precision.

Why consider da Vinci Single-Site gallbladder surgery?

Because da Vinci Single-Site gallbladder surgery is performed through a single incision in the belly button using very precise, state-of-the-art instruments, visible scarring is dramatically limited.

The da Vinci Surgical System works by translating your doctor’s hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of these tiny instruments inside your body.

In addition to being virtually scarless, cholecystectomy using da Vinci offers several other potential benefits as well:

    • Low rate of major complications, including a lower risk of infection
    • Virtually scarless surgery
    • Faster recovery and shorter hospital stays
    • Minimal pain compared to traditional laparoscopy*

*Comparable to results of most published studies on single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomies.

  • What are patients saying?

When her doctors discovered gallstones during an ultrasound, Kasia chose to have a da Vinci Single-Site gallbladder surgery. Hear about her experience in this video.

  • Am I eligible for da Vinci surgery?

That’s a question to ask your doctor. Clinical studies suggest da Vinci Single-Site surgery is effective for cholecystectomy. Since individual results may vary, it’s important to discuss treatment and surgical options, as well as the risks and benefits of each with your physician.

If you aren't a candidate for da Vinci Single-Site gallbladder surgery, ask about multiport da Vinci surgery. Through this procedure, the gallbladder is removed through a few small incisions – called ports – using the da Vinci system.

With the enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control da Vinci provides, Wellmont patients have a variety of options to avoid the large incisions and longer recovery times required by traditional cholecystectomy.
