David Tipton’s weight was clearly affecting his health. At only 48 years of age, he – and his wife – were growing increasingly concerned.
“I had no energy,” he said. “Every time I sat down, I fell asleep. If I bent over to tie my shoes I was out of breath.”
David developed Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and even sleep apnea.
All that is resolved now, said Kathy, David’s wife. “No diabetes, no high cholesterol. The CPAP machine is gone. No more snoring. And no more medications either.”
David’s laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, he said, is his tool.
“It’s a learning process,” he said. “You’ve got to learn to slow down, take smaller bites and chew. You have to learn to change what you’re eating. You can’t eat nearly as much as you used to. And the lap belt is a tool that helps you.”
“I hated going shopping. And now when Kathy and I go out shopping, I can find all kinds of things I want to buy. I’ve got so many clothes now I’ll never wear them all. It’s made a huge change in my life.”
“The bad part is if you eat too fast, you’re going to get sick. That’s no fun. But that’s part of it.”
“It’s not just a one-person change. It’s the whole family. You’ve got to have everyone on board or it will be much harder.”
