  • FAQs

Q: Does Wellmont have the capacity to care for Cigna® beneficiaries and their families?

A: Absolutely. Wellmont’s eight member hospitals have more than enough capacity to provide quality, compassionate care to all beneficiaries affected by this change. Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, for example, recently completed Project Platinum, a five-year, $114 million dollar expansion and renovation that positions it better than ever to accommodate new patients.

Wellmont offers eight emergency rooms, two trauma centers and two urgent care facilities. It also partners with more than 1,000 in-network Highlands Wellmont Health Network physicians, many of whom also operate urgent care facilities and after-hours clinics.

But in the event of a true emergency, you should visit the closest emergency room. Emergencies are not considered out-of-network, regardless of the hospital at which you seek care. Wellmont Nurse Connection provides 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week access to registered nurses who can help assess your condition and direct you to the nearest emergency room or point of care. Please call 1-877-230-NURSE (6877) to learn more.

Q: Does Wellmont have enough of a Johnson City presence to treat patients who live and work there?

A: Wellmont Urgent Care, located adjacent to the Tri-Cities Lifestyle Center at 378 Marketplace Boulevard, offers emergency department trained physicians, quality service and extended hours of operation – 8 a.m.-11 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

But this facility offers much more than just urgent care services. Also located here are imaging services, including computed tomography – or CT – and X-ray. Full laboratory services are available on site, as are physical therapy and occupational health services.

Wellmont CVA Heart Institute recently expanded its Johnson City practice by adding five new physicians formerly with Tri-State Cardiology and moving to a new, larger location at 2428 Knob Creek Road. This practice provides the full spectrum of cardiovascular services.

Wellmont also partners with more than 200 in-network Johnson City-based providers through Highlands Wellmont Health Network. This provides you with access to a host of specialists and primary care services – from family medicine to pediatrics to OB/GYN. You can search for in-network providers at www.hwhn.com.

Please call 1-877-230-NURSE (6877) to find an in-network provider near you.

Q: Does Wellmont have comprehensive women’s and children’s services?

A: Yes. From a Level III neonatal intensive care unit to specialized pediatric care to quality, compassionate obstetricians and gynecologists, Wellmont has robust service offerings to meet your family’s needs.

Wellmont is the region’s only Children’s Miracle Network affiliate, helping provide specialized equipment and services. Holston Valley provides a dedicated pediatrics unit and NICU, and it has also partnered with East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in Knoxville to provide access to a rotating clinic of pediatric subspecialists. Subspecialties not available through Wellmont can be accessed elsewhere at in-network rates as determined by your insurance provider.

Wellmont and its partners also provide easy access to OB/GYNs throughout the region. From integrated practices like Holston Valley Specialty OB/GYN and Women’s Health Care Specialists, to dozens of in-network Highlands Wellmont Health Network providers throughout the region, we have a physician that is right for you.

Wellmont also provides a full spectrum of women’s health services. Wellmont has the region’s only two breast centers accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, and the da Vinci Robotic Surgery System, used often in gynecological surgeries to reduce scarring and improve recovery time.

For more information about these or any other services, please call 1-877-230-NURSE (6877).

Q: How can Holston Valley Medical Center and its emergency department have the capacity to treat this many new patients?

A: Holston Valley’s recent Project Platinum expansion, which includes an all-new emergency department, positions the hospital better than ever to care for you and your family.

Additionally, the hospital recently increased its clinical workforce by 75 registered nurses. This has opened additional inpatient beds while also allowing our caregivers to spend more time at the bedside, providing compassionate, one-on-one care. The increased inpatient capacity has resulted in greater efficiency in our emergency department as well. Patients in our emergency department who need to be admitted do not have to wait for open beds and are instead sent to the appropriate inpatient unit without delay.

The average wait time to see a nurse after a patient registers in the emergency department is just four minutes, and Holston Valley's average time from emergency department arrival to discharge home in October was only 162 minutes, far exceeding the industry goal of 240 minutes. Additionally, there is continuing improvement being seen in those times.

The Holston Valley emergency department now has 15 beds designated as a “fast track” unit, where patients with lower-acuity ailments can be treated as quickly as possible. But the hospital is also a Level I trauma center, so it is prepared to care for all your emergency needs, no matter how serious.

Holston Valley is continually monitoring these processes and working to improve our quality of care and operational efficiency.
