Dr. Istfan earned medical degrees from West Virginia State College in Institute, W. Va., and Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va. He completed his internship, residency and fellowship at Marshall University Affiliated Hospitals. He takes pride in using his clinical expertise to improve quality of life and longevity for patients. He also takes seriously his responsibility to educate patients about how to live healthier lives. He believes that what a patient does at home is almost as important as the work a surgeon does to repair heart damage. By quitting smoking, eating well, exercising regularly and keeping diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure in check, patients can improve their heart health and live longer and healthier lives. How do you start out each day? I have coffee and listen to the news with my wife Yolanda. How would you like to be remembered? Someone who saved lives, was caring and made a difference for a great deal of others. What alternative occupation would you choose? An airline pilot - I still think about trying to take some time to learn how to fly. What do you like most about your job? Being able to help my patients and make their lives better. I like making a difference. What is most important to you when helping your patients? Improving my patients' quality of life and helping them to understand their disease and how to live with it.
