Osteopathic Residency Program

Get the training you need to excel.

For excellent medical training in a rural setting, Wellmont Health System now offers a family practice residency based at its community hospitals in Southwest Virginia and Southeast Kentucky. To augment that training, our outstanding community hospitals work in conjunction with Wellmont Health System’s award-winning tertiary care centers. Residents enrolled in our program will be trained by expert family medicine physicians skilled in both traditional and hospitalist services. Training opportunities from neonatal medicine to urology and from rural medicine to Level I trauma promise broadbased experience and diverse expertise. Upon completion of the program, residents will be able to deliver care to a broad spectrum of patients. The program’s convenient Virginia location allows easy access to Tennessee, Kentucky and North Carolina.

Why choose us?
As a resident, you get the best of both worlds – primary care training at exceptional community hospitals with easy access to the invaluable experiences gained in a larger hospital with a Level I trauma center, a Level III neonatal intensive care unit and one of the nation’s Top 100 heart programs. Our program’s association with Holston Valley Medical Center and Bristol Regional Medical Center also enables residents to explore career opportunities at a tertiary referral center. Our residency program offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits. Residents will receive continuing medical education days to participate in educational conferences in addition to their vacation days. Residents will also receive an educational allowance based on their program year. A newly renovated education center will be available for didactics and special lectures. A medical library will also be a part of the education center. Single unit student housing will be available free of charge to our medical students. The residency office will assist students and residents in obtaining housing.

Our region also offers:

  • A wide array of natural beauty, from breathtaking mountains to lush pastureland and mysterious caverns
  • An abundance of hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing and kayaking opportunities
  • Proximity to such sites as historic Abingdon, Va., featuring the famous Barter Theatre; Bristol, Tenn., home of the fastest half-mile track in NASCAR; the famed Virginia Creeper Trail for hiking or bicycling; and close-to-home entertainment found at High Knob or Guest River Gorge, both located in Wise County, Va.
