Financial Assistance
Our mission is to provide superior care with compassion to all patients who come to Wellmont Health System facilities. Representatives at our facilities can also help you understand the insurance and billing process.
Regardless of the patient’s ability to pay, Wellmont facilities will perform medical screening exams to detect emergency medical conditions and to stabilize the patient. Services to treat medically necessary conditions may require the patient, his or her family or their guarantor to make financial arrangements. All patients who are uninsured receive a 60 percent discount off total patient charges (with a few exceptions).
Wellmont offers a financial assistance program to patients with limited resources that is based on the federal poverty guidelines. Patients who are requesting financial assistance must complete a financial assistance worksheet that is available by request at our hospitals or is available via download. The patient will have to supply documentation that may include tax returns, pay stubs, bank statements and other information regarding certain assets.
Applicants for Wellmont’s financial assistance program fall into one of two categories: insured or uninsured. If the patient or guarantor is insured and is below 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, that application will be approved for a 95 percent adjustment after the insurance has paid. The applicant will be responsible for 5 percent of charges but not more than $500.
If the patient or guarantor is uninsured and is below 150 percent of the poverty guidelines, the application will be approved for a 95 percent adjustment and be responsible for 5 percent but not more than $500. If the applicant is over 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines but less than 200 percent, the applicant will be approved for a 90 percent adjustment and be responsible for 10 percent of charges but not more than $1,000. If the applicant is over 200 percent of the poverty guidelines, the applicant will be approved for a 60 percent uninsured adjustment as is anyone with no insurance with or without a financial assistance worksheet application.
It is important that you let us know if you are having trouble paying your bill. To meet certain federal requirements, hospitals must bill all patients for the amount they owe and attempt to collect those debts in the same fashion for all patients. This means we may turn unpaid bills over to a collection agency, which could affect your credit status.
If you have questions, please ask the admissions department at your treating hospital for direction. We will treat your questions with confidentiality and courtesy.
