Dr. Paul Jett Joins Wellmont Medical Associates, To See Patients In Kingsport, Rogersville

Dr. Paul JettDr. Paul Jett, an innovative physiatrist who focuses on the rehabilitative aspects of pain and encourages a healthy lifestyle, has joined Wellmont Medical Associates.

Dr. Jett, a medical doctor, provides high-quality care through his newly established Wellmont Medical Associates Spine & Rehabilitation practice at 121 E. Ravine Road, Suite 200, in Kingsport.

He will continue to see patients part time at 401 Scenic Drive, which is next to Hawkins County Memorial Hospital in Rogersville. He saw patients at Hawkins County Memorial when he operated a private practice in Morristown.

"I'm excited about joining Wellmont Health System," Dr. Jett said. "I wanted to be part of an integrated health system that was all-encompassing, where I could enjoy practicing medicine and offer superior service to my patients. That's readily available at Wellmont."

Dr. Jett is one of only about 10,000 physiatrists in the country. The field, also known as physical medicine and rehabilitation, addresses multiple medical needs, such as spine rehabilitation, nonoperative spine and orthopedic care and musculoskeletal health.

"A big part of our care involves the spine," Dr. Jett said. "We attempt to isolate the pain generator causing the problem in someone's back - sometimes it's more than one - and treat it through a nonoperative approach as much as possible."

Other elements of care available from a physiatrist are nerve conduction studies and interventional spinal procedures, such as epidural steroid injections. Dr. Jett said he can also work with speech, occupational and physical therapists to assist stroke and other neurological patients.

Dr. Jett said pain management from a rehabilitation approach is focused on wellness. So he encourages his patients to eat well, obtain an appropriate amount of sleep and not smoke. That dovetails with the philosophy of Wellmont LiveWell, a collaborative effort launched by Wellmont to encourage the region to commit to important habits such as regular exercise, healthy diets and maintaining proper blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Dr. Jett's decision to become a physician can be traced in many ways to his parents' careers as a social worker and teacher. Through their choices, he learned the value of helping people and knew that would play a role in deciding what type of work he would choose.

He said he enjoys taking care of care of patients, learning more about them and educating them about their health.

"I want my patients to know I'm here for them and will do what I can to help them," Dr. Jett said. "I consider myself as much of a coach as a physician. I will offer solutions but also set realistic expectations based on where the patient is in the disease process. I also encourage my patients to become involved in their own care because that will help them."

Dr. Stephen Combs, a medical doctor and chief executive medical officer of Wellmont Medical Associates, said the addition of Dr. Jett shows the depth of care available from that organization and the rest of Wellmont.

"We are excited Dr. Jett has joined us because it enhances the breadth and quality of care we offer patients," he said. "As an organization, we are focused on delivering the best health care anywhere, and the opening of this practice reinforces the sophistication of care available in our health system. Dr. Jett is an outstanding physician who will blend well with the other high-caliber physicians who permeate Wellmont."

Dr. Jett graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Kentucky and completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Charlotte Institute of Rehabilitation in North Carolina. He recently received a master's degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee.

He is certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Board of Pain Medicine and the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners.
