3/6/14 - Sharon Sword, an innovative nursing professional for 27 years at Holston Valley Medical Center, has been promoted to serve as the hospital’s director of case management. Sword, who was serving as interim director, now provides leadership and vision to the case management department, with objectives of reducing length of stay, coordinating care and facilitating transitions to post-acute settings. She will also manage the department’s daily operations, including the budget.
3/5/14 – Wellmont Health System leaders shared on Tuesday, March 4, with Gov. Terry McAuliffe the short-term and long-term benefit to the community of expanding Medicaid. McAuliffe listened to representatives of health systems and the Wise County Chamber of Commerce and other community stakeholders during a roundtable discussion at the University of Virginia-Wise Convocation Center. Joining him was Dr. Bill Hazel, Virginia’s secretary of health and human services.
3/4/14 – Wexford House, a comprehensive skilled nursing facility that
recently joined Wellmont Health System, has earned two awards from a national
organization that focuses on enhancing quality. The 174-bed facility received the Embracing
Quality Awards during the American Health Care Association and the National
Center for Assisted Living’s sixth annual quality symposium.

2/20/14 – Wexford House, which delivers high-caliber skilled nursing to residents of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, was recently accredited by a national organization for its focus on its residents’ quality of life. The facility earned a Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement Accreditation from Providigm, a Denver-based organization that creates quality improvement solutions for health care.
2/20/14 – Bronchial thermoplasty is a three-part outpatient procedure that treats asthma by delivering concentrated bursts of mild heat to the smooth airways in the lungs. The heat limits the airways' ability to constrict, and that alleviates asthma symptoms. Dr. Wael El Minaoui, a pulmonologist with Wellmont Medical Associates Pulmonology & Sleep, performs the procedure at Holston Valley Medical Center. More than a dozen procedures have been completed, and Dr. El Minaoui said all of them have responded well.
